Summary: This volume of edited proceedings comprises twenty-one selected papers from the Fourth International Conference on Language and Development, Hanoi, Vietnam, October 13-15, 1999. The conference series started at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand in 1993. That first conference led to the publication of a book by Addison Wesley Longman called Language and Development - Teachers in a Changing World (Kenny and Savage, 1997), and to subsequent conferences in Bali, Indonesia (Crooks and Crewes, 1995) and in Langkawi, Malaysia (INTAN, 1998). - Back cover
