520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The Christinaki, which sank in the Atlantic in 1994 killing all 27 crewmembers, was a 26,000 ton bulk carrier, carrying a cargo of scrap metal. And there has been no government inquiry of any kind into why the ship sank. Bulk carriers carry iron ore, coal, scrap, grain and other highly profitable 'bulk' cargoes which are loaded directly into huge single-skin holds. According to structural engineer John Jubb these ships are simply not strong enough. They have increased in size without any significant design changes and the hull and bulkheads cannot take the stresses and strains of the tramp trade. In the past ten years 49 of these huge vessels have broken up, and over 550 seamen have died. The international community has done little to stem the tide of bulk carrier losses, which continue at a slow but deadly rate.
