Lebetkin, Steven R. Gabriel Fontrier, 1999 viewed 29 July 2019 (Gabriel Fontrier, born in Bucharest, Romania, November 21, 1918; died August 5, 1998; Graduated from Queens College in 1942. Collaborated with Sol Berkowitz and Leo Kraft on A new approach to sight singing. Served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. While stationed in Alaska he set up a library and recreation center, taught classes in analytic geometry and calculus and was also music director for the naval base. In 1944 he was stationed in the Pacific where he became an aerial navigator in a squadron that recovered survivors who had been shot down. He wrote his first string quartet while stationed in the Phillipines in addition to many poems. He remained in the Naval Reserve until 1955 and taught classes in navigation and celestial navigation theory. Appointed as a music tutor at Queens College in 1947 and remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1983. Founded the Men's Glee Club at Queens and started the Levittown Choral Society and the Levittown Orchestra. Received a master's degree in music composition from Columbia University. He pursued a lifelong study of theoretical math and physics in addition to composing music in a variety of forms.)
